Canada Night

Newnham International Cultural Programme (NICP) continues to introduce you to yet another culture this term. This term, we set our theme as CANADA. In the following weeks to come, we will be organising several events, which will guide you through fascinating Canadian culture.
On 12 February, CANADA NIGHT was held in the Newnham Bar.

This event aimed to feature some of the contemporary Canadian cultures, which are often taken for granted or are assumed to be American by many people. The event was held in the Bar, with Canadian music as the BGM. Information cards on Canadian inventions and popular Canadian figures were prepared alongside with two big panels, one showing pictures from different regions and the other introducing major festivals in Canada. Participants enjoyed Canadian cocktail – Bloody Ceaser – and Canadian sweets – Maple Candies – while discovering the eye-opening aspects of Canada. The event attracted people not only from Newnham but also more widely from other colleges of the university.

Speaker’s event “Just Pop?: Japanese pop culture and Miyazaki Hayao’s animation”

The term ended by a Pudding Seminar-style Speaker’s event, by Gitte Marianne Hansen, a PhD student in Japanese Studies. She introduced the audience to the intriguing characteristics of Japanese pop culture, which cannot be divided as high and low culture like in other countries. She also talked about the growing popularity of Japanese pop culture and how they are enjoyed by people in various countries. Using the examples of Miyazaki Hayao’s films, she also explored the potential interpretation of popular film as a message pointing to the increasing tendency of eating disorder among Japanese youth. Audience ranged from Newnham students to non-Newnham researchers.

Tea Ceremony (12 November, 2010)

The second event was held at the Kaetsu Educational & Cultural Centre, which generously agreed on holding the Tea Ceremony for NICP. Five students attended an hour-long tea ceremony in the authentic Japanese Room in the Centre. Participants enjoyed watching how the tea is prepared, learning about the philosophy behind those practices and tasting tea and some Japanese traditional sweets. The calm atmosphere of the room for sure gave participants a sense of purification and relaxation.

Japanese Culture Night (6 November, 2010)

This event aimed to spread the traditional as well as modern cultural aspects of Japan. With the support of Anglo-Japanese Society, the event provided participants with the opportunity to try several Japanese culture – Food (including Sushi), Origami (paper crafts), Yukata (traditional costume) and Manga/Anime illustration. They also tried using chopsticks and had a chance to get their name written in Japanese. At the end of the event, the documentary film ‘Flashes of Hope – Hibakusha travelling the world’ (Bagnarello, 2009) was screened, which reminded people of the two not-to-be-forgotten atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This interactive and informative event ended with success, with nearly 50 people’s attendance.

Newnham Freshers Fair

For two hours between 2pm and 4pm on 9 October, the Freshers Fair was held in Newnham to get freshers involved in Newnham-based clubs and societies.

NICP had a stall and introduced itself to the freshers. Our stall was pretty lively throughout the fair. We had reports from the past for people to have a look at and postcards and some crafts from Japan (as this term’s theme is Japan). People stopped by, asked questions, read report and signed up for the mailing list!

If you missed the Fair but wants to join the mailing list please email the coordinator at nicpnewnham*gmail.com (Please replace * with @when emailing to it). You will be informing you about the upcoming events! NICP is not exclusive to Newnham. Even if you are not from Newnham, your interest makes you eligible to be part of our community. So please get in touch!

NICP at the Newnham Freshers Fair

Now that the University Freshers Fair is over, many colleges are holding their own Freshers Fair. Newnham is not an exception. Newnham is going to have its Freshers Fair on Saturday, 9 October.  (Details of time and venue to be announced soon.)

NICP is going to have a stall at the fair, where you will be able to sign up for the mailing list, check the coming-up events and enjoy some snacks from this term’s theme country. Just stop by and check out what’s there!

Also, if you are interested in helping with the NICP, please talk to the people at the stall about it. Either for the whole year or for specific events, we will be pleased to have more people involved in the NICP :)

Look forward to seeing you there!
